Features in Lane represent development initiatives derived from customer needs, strategic goals, or internal ideas. They help your team move from discovery to delivery with alignment and visibility. Features can be created manually or synced with delivery tools like Linear and Jira.
Features are account-level objects - all members currently have access to all Features in the workspace.

Purpose

After reviewing and prioritizing Insights, Features are created to define what your team will build. They can be prioritized, tagged, assigned, and grouped into releases - making them central to your product development cycle. You can also track their delivery through your connected tools.

Setup and Workflow

Once your team starts working with customer insights or connects Lane to delivery tools (like Linear, Jira, or internal workflows), Features become the central link between feedback and execution. Here’s how to manage them:
  1. Create from Discovery:
    • After reviewing Insights, convert them into new Features or link to existing ones.
    • You can also create standalone Features to capture technical or strategic initiatives.
  2. Sync with Delivery Tools:
    • Push Features to connected tools like Linear or Jira to initiate implementation.
    • Or pull in issues from these tools and link them back to Insights in Lane.
  3. Prioritize and Plan:
    • Use fields like customer impact, revenue, or strategic goal to prioritize Features.
    • Assign Features to Releases and visualize them in Roadmaps for better planning.
  4. Track Progress and Iterate:
    • As work progresses, update statuses and fields to reflect the stage of each Feature.
    • Track delivery across both Lane and your connected tools to ensure alignment.
  5. Close the Feedback Loop:
    • Once Features are shipped, revisit linked Insights to follow up with customers.
    • This helps show responsiveness and builds trust with users who shared feedback.

Feature Fields

Each feature can be enriched with the following fields:
  • Description: A short summary of what this feature will deliver.
  • Status: Track the stage (To Do, In Progress, Done, etc.). You can configure these under Settings → Customizations.
  • Product: Link the Feature to a relevant product if you’re managing multiple.
  • Releases: Assign a release cycle (configured under _Settings → Fields).
  • Assignee: Assign someone responsible for the Feature.
  • Tags: Add tags to help organize and filter Features.
  • Score: Helps prioritize work by defining Value and Effort.

Best Practices

  • Link relevant Insights to each Feature to ensure a strong feedback-to-delivery loop.
  • Regularly review Feature statuses and update the Release plan in your roadmap.
