Objectives in Lane represent your strategic goals and help align product work with business outcomes. There are two types of Objectives: Goals and OKRs, both structured to keep progress measurable and visible.
Objectives are account-level objects - all members currently have access to all Objectives in the workspace.

Types of Objectives

1. Goals

Goals are straightforward objectives where you directly link Opportunities. The progress of the Goal updates automatically as linked Opportunities are completed.

2. OKRs (Objectives and Key Results)

OKRs follow a structured framework:
  • An Objective holds the strategic intent.
  • Multiple Key Results define measurable outcomes.
  • Each Key Result can have linked Opportunities.
  • Progress rolls up from Opportunities → Key Results → Objective.

Creating an Objective

To add a new Objective:
  1. Click the + icon next to Objectives in the sidebar.
  2. Select the type: Goal or OKR.
  3. Fill in the title and description.
  4. Assign relevant fields such as:
    • Timeframe
    • Health (On Track, At Risk, Off Track)
    • Tags
  5. Click Add Objective to save.

Fields and Progress Tracking

  • Status: Indicates the current state of the Objective. You can customize status options under Settings → Fields.
  • Health: Manually used to indicate progress status: On Track, At Risk, or Off Track.
  • Progress:
    • For Goals, progress = % of completed linked Opportunities.
    • For OKRs, progress = % of completed Key Results (which in turn depend on their linked Opportunities).

Setup

How you use Objectives depends on your team size and planning process.
  • Start simple with Goals if you’re looking to track progress on direct initiatives.
  • Use OKRs if you want to align multiple initiatives across teams under a shared strategic objective.
We recommend capturing the strategic layer of your product work - this ensures better prioritization and clearer decision-making.
You can begin with monthly or quarterly Goals, create Roadmaps, and regularly review progress and health to stay aligned.

Keeping Track of Strategic Goals

  • Use the Health field alongside progress bars to monitor strategic alignment in real time.
  • Objectives automatically update based on Opportunity progress - no manual check-ins needed (yet).
  • Use Views or Strategic Roadmaps to monitor progress across teams and timeframes.

FAQs and Troubleshooting

Q: What’s the difference between a Goal and an OKR in Lane?
A: A Goal is a single objective with directly linked Opportunities. An OKR contains Key Results, each of which can link to Opportunities and collectively determine progress.
Q: Can I link the same Opportunity to multiple Objectives?
A: Yes, an Opportunity can be linked to multiple Objectives or Key Results. This helps when a single initiative contributes to multiple strategic goals. Progress is calculated individually within each Objective based on the linked Opportunities.
Q: How is Health different from Status or Progress?
A: Health is a manual indicator of confidence (On Track, At Risk, Off Track). Status shows workflow state, and Progress is automatically calculated from linked Opportunities.
Q: Are check-ins supported for Objectives?
A: Not yet — check-ins are planned for a future update.
