Customize your workspace in Lane to match your team’s workflow using flexible fields. These fields help structure how records like Features, Objectives, and Insights are categorized, tracked, and prioritized.

Concept and Value

Fields allow you to adapt Lane to your internal processes by defining custom:
  • Statuses (e.g., To do, In progress)
  • Releases (e.g., sprints, milestones)
  • Products (e.g., different product lines or areas)
  • Tags (e.g., themes, teams, priorities)
  • Timeframes (e.g., quarters, months)
This enables better reporting, filtering, and planning across your workspace.

How to access the Fields page

To configure your workspace fields:
  1. Click on your workspace name in the top-left corner.
  2. Go to Settings → Fields.
  3. Choose the field type you want to manage: Status, Release, Product, Tags, or Time-frame.

1. Status

Statuses define the lifecycle stages of a record. They are grouped under default status groups like:
  • Parking lot (not configurable)
  • To do
  • In progress
  • Done
Each status group can have multiple custom statuses. For example, within “To do”, you might have “Planning”, “Planned”, or “Ready for grooming”. You can:
  • Add new statuses within groups (except Parking lot)
  • Choose icon colors to visually differentiate them
  • Configure statuses separately for each object type (e.g., Features, Insights)
You can switch the object (e.g., Feature, Objective) using the dropdown at the top right of the Status tab.

2. Release

Releases help you organize product development into time-bound milestones or cycles. Each Feature can be assigned a Release. A Release includes:
  • A name (e.g., “Cycle 4” or “March Release”)
  • A start and end date
Use releases to group features into sprints, launch batches, or engineering cycles. Click Add Release to define a new release cycle.

3. Product

Products are used to segment records (like Features and Insights) by product line, domain, or business area. Each product has:
  • A name
  • An icon color
Products are especially useful when working across multiple teams or offerings. They’re used in:
  • Roadmaps
  • Insights
  • Feature lists
Click Add Product to create a new one.

4. Tags

Tags are flexible labels that help you organize and filter records across Lane. Use tags for:
  • Themes (e.g., “Growth”, “Internal”, “To Validate”)
  • Teams (e.g., “Account Managers”, “Engineering”)
  • Priority or stage (e.g., “To validate”, “Ideating”)
You can add as many tags as needed. Tags work across all core objects — Features, Objectives, Insights, etc. Click Add Tag to create a new tag.

5. Time-frame

Timeframes define when work is planned or expected to happen. They help with aligning work to business cycles. Each Timeframe includes:
  • A name (e.g., “Q1 2025”, “Now”, “Later”)
  • An optional start and end date
You can customize timeframes based on your planning approach — monthly, quarterly, or custom cycles. Timeframes are used in: Click Add Time-frame to define a new one.

Best Practices

  • Use consistent naming conventions for statuses, products, and releases to avoid confusion.
  • Periodically review and clean up unused tags or timeframes.
  • Customize fields early when setting up your workspace to ensure consistency as your team scales.

FAQs & Troubleshooting

Q: Can I configure different statuses for different record types?
A: Yes, statuses are configured per object. You can define separate workflows for Features, Insights, Objectives, etc., using the object switcher in the Status tab.
Q: Why can’t I add statuses under the Parking lot group?
A: Parking lot (or Triage) is a system-defined group used for holding unprioritized work. It cannot be customized to ensure consistency across workflows.
Q: Are releases only available for Features?
A: Yes, Releases are specific to the Features object. They help you plan and track product development cycles.
Q: Can I reuse the same tag or product across multiple objects?
A: Yes. Tags and Products are global fields that can be used across Features, Objectives, Insights, and other core objects in Lane.
Q: Is it mandatory to add dates to Timeframes?
A: No, start and end dates are optional. You can define open-ended timeframes like “Now” or “Later” based on your planning style.
