Plan is available to all workspace members. Contributors have read-only access.
Purpose
As your team moves from discovery to delivery, decisions need context. Plan gives you a place to write that context — structured documents backed by templates, linked directly to the features and objectives they support. Instead of scattered Google Docs or Notion pages, your strategy documents live inside Lane where they can reference real customer signals and stay connected to your roadmap.Creating a document
- Open Plan from the sidebar.
- Click New doc in the top-right corner.
- Start writing in the editor, or choose a template to scaffold your document.
Templates
Plan includes built-in templates for common product documents. When creating or editing a document, click the Template button to browse available templates. Selecting a template populates the editor with a structured outline you can customize. Available templates include:- PRD (Product Requirement Document) — define problem, scope, requirements, and success criteria
- Opportunity Canvas — map customer pain, opportunity size, assumptions, and validation approach
- Bug Report — capture reproducible defect details, impact, severity, and expected behavior
- Product Discovery — structure research insights, hypotheses, experiments, and decision outcomes
- Competitive Analysis — compare competitors, differentiation, and strategic implications
- Product Strategy — align vision, target market, strategic bets, and roadmap direction
- Product Vision Board — clarify long-term product direction, audience, needs, and outcomes
- Stakeholder Updates — share progress, risks, decisions, and asks with key stakeholders
- Business Objective Brief — define objective context, expected impact, constraints, and ownership
- Release Notes — communicate shipped features, fixes, known issues, and rollout notes
AI-assisted writing
You can use AI to help draft document content. Click the AI button in the document toolbar and describe what you want to write. The AI generates content based on your prompt and any linked features or objectives, giving you a starting point to refine.AI-assisted writing consumes credits from your workspace balance. You can monitor usage from Settings → Billing.
Rich text editor
The Plan editor supports a full set of formatting options through the toolbar and a slash command menu:- Text formatting — bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, highlight, and code
- Headings — three levels of headings for document structure
- Lists — bullet lists, numbered lists, and checklists
- Blocks — blockquotes, code blocks, horizontal rules, and tables
- Media — insert and resize images directly in the document
/ at the start of a line to open the slash command menu for quick access to any block type.
Linking features and objectives
Documents can be linked to features and objectives to connect your written strategy to the product work it supports. Use the Links panel on the right side of the document detail view to:- Click Link Feature or Link Objective.
- Search for the item you want to link.
- Select it to create the connection.
Duplicating a document
To create a copy of an existing document:- Open the document you want to duplicate.
- Click the Duplicate button in the toolbar.
- A new document is created with the same content, ready for editing.
Deleting a document
To delete a document, open it and click the Delete button in the toolbar. You will be asked to confirm before the document is permanently removed.FAQs
