The sidebar is the primary navigation area in Lane. It helps you move between core objects, saved views, and frequently used pages with minimal friction. This article explains what appears in the sidebar, how it is organized, and how you can customize it based on your workflow.

Layout at a glance

From top to bottom, the sidebar is organized into these sections:
  1. Workspace switcher — workspace logo and name with access to your profile, settings, and sign out.
  2. Notifications — bell icon showing unread activity from features, customers, and insights you’re subscribed to.
  3. Search — quickly jump to any saved view, feature, customer, or objective.
  4. Core objects — the main navigation items for Discover, Features, Customers, Roadmaps, Objectives, and Docs.
  5. Favorites — one-click access to views you’ve pinned.
  6. My Views — your personal saved views across every object.

Workspace switcher

At the very top, click your workspace name to open a menu that includes:
  • Profile — update your name, avatar, and personal info.
  • Settings — manage workspace preferences, members, billing, and integrations.
  • Integrations — connect tools like HubSpot, Intercom, Linear, Slack, and Jira.
  • Invite member — add teammates to your workspace.
  • Sign out.
Contributors see a reduced menu with just their profile and sign out.

Notifications

The bell icon next to the workspace name opens the Notifications panel. A red dot indicates unread activity. Notifications keep you informed when something changes on records you’re subscribed to — like new insights linked to a feature, comments, or customer updates. You can learn more in the Notifications guide. Use the search bar near the top of the sidebar to quickly find and open saved views, features, customers, objectives, and more. This is especially useful when you have many Favorites or personal views and want fast access without scrolling.

Core objects

By default, the sidebar includes the following objects:
  • Discover — explore incoming feedback, trends, and themes surfaced from customer conversations.
  • Features — manage opportunities and product features, and link them to insights and delivery work.
  • Customers — manage customer accounts and see related insights, features, and objectives.
  • Roadmaps — visualize and communicate planned work over time.
  • Objectives — track goals and OKRs and connect them to customer-driven opportunities.
  • Docs — create PRDs, strategy docs, and other product documents — from scratch, from templates, or with the AI agent.
These objects form the core structure of Lane. Each item has a + button next to it for inline creation — add a new feature, customer, roadmap, objective, or doc without leaving the sidebar.

Favorites

Below the core objects, you’ll find Favorites.
  • Pin any view, feature, customer, or doc to this section for one-click access.
  • Favorites are personal — each user sees their own.
  • Use this for the handful of views you return to most often throughout the day.

My Views

My Views contains all the saved views you’ve created across different objects.
  • Every saved view automatically appears here.
  • Views are personal — each user sees only their own saved views.
  • Drag and drop to reorder views to match how you work.
This allows every team member to organize Lane in a way that fits their role and workflow, and lets you switch quickly between different perspectives without changing global settings.
Contributors don’t have access to the My Views section, since saved views are a workspace-member feature.

Customizing the sidebar

You can customize the sidebar to show only the objects you need. Depending on your use case, you may want to focus on a smaller set of objects. For example, if roadmapping or OKRs are not relevant for your workflow, you can hide those sections from the sidebar.

Objects you can hide

The following objects can be toggled on or off from the sidebar:
  • Themes
  • Features
  • Roadmaps
  • Objectives
Enabling Objectives requires a Business plan or higher. On the Starter plan, Objectives remain hidden in the sidebar.

Objects that cannot be hidden

  • Discover
  • Customers
  • Docs
These objects are always visible, as they form the foundation of customer context and planning in Lane.

How to hide sidebar items

To hide objects from the sidebar:
  1. Click your workspace name in the top-left corner.
  2. Go to Settings → Preferences.
  3. Disable the toggles for the objects you want to hide.

Important note

  • Hiding an object only removes it from the sidebar.
  • The object can still appear in filters, relationships, and detail views across the product.
  • No data or functionality is removed by hiding an item.

When to customize your sidebar

Customizing the sidebar is helpful when:
  • You want a cleaner navigation focused on your daily workflow.
  • You want faster access to only the most relevant sections.
  • Certain objects (like Roadmaps or Objectives) aren’t part of your process.
By tailoring the sidebar, you reduce noise and make navigation more intentional.
